Design Realities Beyond the Wall
Mit der politischen Wende von 1989, mit der Übernahme der D-Mark und dem Beitritt der DDR zur BRD im Oktober 1990 verschwand nicht nur ein totalitäres Staats- und Wirtschaftssystem mitten in Europa. In weiten Bereichen erodierte auch die Kultur und Wertschätzung einer während 45 Jahren aufgebauten Designtradition. Heute allerdings, mehr als 3 Jahrzehnte später, kommt es zu einer bemerkenswerten Rückkehr des sogenannten “DDR-Designs” – angefangen bei nostalgisch-verklärten Rückbesinnungen über Nachhaltigkeitsdiskurse bis hin zur aktuellen Maker- und Reparaturkultur.
Das Seminar nimmt diese Bezüge unmittelbar auf und widmet sich der Erforschung der Designkultur der DDR, ihrer je spezifischen Produkte und den damit verbundenen politischen, sozialen, wirtschaftlichen und technologischen Kontexten sowie deren Verortung im aktuellen Gestaltungsdiskurs.

With the political turnaround of 1989, with the adoption of the Deutschmark and the accession of the GDR to the FRG in October 1990, not only did a totalitarian state and economic system disappear in the middle of Europe. In many areas, the culture and appreciation of a design tradition built up over 45 years also eroded. Today, however, more than 3 decades later, there is a remarkable return of the so-called „GDR design“ – starting with nostalgic and transfigured recollections over sustainability discourses up to the current maker and repair culture.
The seminar takes up these references directly and dedicates itself to researching the design culture of the GDR, its respective specific products and the associated political, social, economic and technological contexts as well as their location in the current design discourse.
